About the American Quarter Horse

Calm, willing, and quick-witted. Quarter Horses are famous for their 'cow sense' and explosive sprint speed over short distances. They are forgiving mounts and the most popular breed in the world.

Feeding & nutrition

Forage-based diet with a ration balancer. Avoid high-starch grains, especially in PSSM1-positive horses.

Health watch-outs

HYPP (Impressive line), HERDA, GBED, PSSM1, navicular disease. AQHA mandates 6-panel genetic testing for stallions.

Care tips

1

Heavily muscled body type means heat dissipation is harder — cool out thoroughly after hard work.

2

Genetic disease panel (HYPP, HERDA, GBED, MH, PSSM1, IMM) before breeding or buying.

3

Easy keepers — restrict pasture and skip grain on most adults.

4

Strong feet but watch for navicular syndrome in stock-type performance lines.
