About the Shetland Pony

Smart, opinionated, and astonishingly strong for size. Shetlands are independent thinkers with strong personalities — charming when handled well, terrors when spoiled. They are pound-for-pound the strongest equine.

Feeding & nutrition

Heavily restricted forage on a slow feeder. Soaked hay (10+ minutes) reduces sugar. NO grain ever for most.

Health watch-outs

Laminitis, equine metabolic syndrome, hyperlipemia (especially in pregnant or stressed ponies), dental crowding.

Care tips

1

EXTREMELY easy keepers — laminitis is the #1 health issue. Use track systems, muzzles, and dry lots.

2

Train them like a horse, not a pet — small size makes bad habits dangerous.

3

Thick double coats; resist over-blanketing in winter.

4

Body condition score weekly; weight creeps up under thick winter hair.
