About the Shire

Calm, patient, and exceptionally gentle. Shires are the tallest horse breed and among the strongest. They are slow to anger, easy to handle, and well-suited to novice owners with the space.

Feeding & nutrition

High forage volume. Most thrive on grass hay plus a vitamin/mineral supplement. Avoid high-starch feeds.

Health watch-outs

CPL, PSSM, shivers, sidebone, and the same general draft issues as Clydesdales. Shorter lifespan than light breeds.

Care tips

1

Massive feathering — daily inspection for mites and bacterial infection.

2

Ample turnout with sturdy fencing; they lean and rub on weak structures.

3

Wide stalls (14x14 minimum) and oversized tack required.

4

Joint and hoof care from yearling stage to support adult frame.
