About the Clydesdale

Gentle, willing, and famously docile despite their size. Clydesdales are 'gentle giants' with calm nerves and a strong work ethic. They bond closely with handlers and tolerate novice riders well.

Feeding & nutrition

60–80 lb of forage daily plus a draft-formulated ration balancer. Avoid sudden grain increases — drafts are prone to colic.

Health watch-outs

CPL (chronic progressive lymphedema), polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM type 1 and 2), shivers, Clydesdale itch.

Care tips

1

Heavy feathers must be cleaned daily to prevent CPL and mites — many owners trim feathers.

2

Large body needs proportionally more forage; budget 2.5–3% of body weight in hay daily.

3

Joint support from a young age; massive frames stress hocks and stifles.

4

Custom-fit tack — most stock tack is too small or pinches.
