Hoof Abscess

A hoof abscess is a pocket of infection inside the hoof, typically caused by bacteria entering through a small crack or puncture. The horse becomes acutely lame — often dramatically so — but most cases resolve quickly once the abscess drains.

Symptoms to watch for

Sudden severe lameness, often non-weight-bearing

Heat in the hoof

Strong digital pulse at the fetlock

Pain response to hoof testers in one specific spot

Visible swelling along the coronary band or pastern in advanced cases

May appear overnight without warning

Common causes

  • Bacteria entering through cracks, nail holes, or puncture wounds
  • Wet conditions softening the white line
  • Bruising from stones or hard ground
  • Poor hoof balance creating stress points
  • Prior laminitic episodes weakening the lamellae

Prevention

  • Pick out feet daily and check for stones or punctures
  • Maintain regular farrier care every 5–6 weeks
  • Keep stables clean and dry
  • Use boots when working on rough terrain
  • Provide balanced nutrition for strong hoof horn
  • Address white line disease early

What to do

  1. 1

Soak the affected foot in warm water with Epsom salts for 15–20 minutes, twice daily.

  2. 2

Apply a poultice (animalintex or magnapaste) and bandage.

  3. 3

Keep the foot clean and bandaged until the abscess bursts.

  4. 4

Once it drains, continue soaking and poulticing for 2–3 days to prevent re-infection.

  5. 5

Confine to a dry stable or small dry paddock until sound.

  6. 6

Have your farrier or vet locate and pare out the abscess if it does not drain in 48 hours.

When to call the vet

Pick up the phone if…

Call the vet if the horse has not improved in 48–72 hours, if you suspect a deep puncture wound (especially through the frog), or if there is significant swelling in the leg. Deep punctures can involve the coffin bone or navicular bursa and are emergencies.
